Community event photography
Local and community events are the backbone of my work as a photographer. On a personal level I love working both in service of and as a member of my community, while on an artistic level photographing events can be really fast-paced and exciting!
A key aspect of my approach to event photography is my natural, documentary style. My favourite images show people caught up in a moment; laughing, reacting to one another, or simply being themselves. I aim to connect with the space around me so that I can convey authentically how it feels to be there, rather than getting all up in people's business and insisting that they smile. Above all, I try to be unobtrusive.
My work is geared towards showing people engaging with the event, making it perfect for marketing and future promotion of your event. That being said, if you just want a nice set of photos to share with attendees, it's great for that too!
The types of community events I photograph can be really varied, ranging from art exhibitions to gaming conventions to pride parades to children's activity days and more! Since 2021 I have had the absolute joy of photographing the Pride Comic Art Festival every year, along with the Palace International Film Festival and a number of visual arts exhibitions - including my own as part of Trans Portraits UK!
MARCHES, PROTESTS & fESTIVALS
Something that has brought me A LOT of joy over the years is photographing festivals, pride parades and protests in Bristol and throughout the UK. Some of this work I do for free - for example I turn up at Bristol Trans Pride and Bristol Balloon Fiesta with my camera every year out of sheer enthusiasm - but for other events, like Bristol Pride, I am hired by an organisation and have a brief to work to.
Regardless of why I'm there, I always have an amazing time. I love connecting with other attendees, and being there to take photos makes me feel like I am able to give something back. Honestly, events like these are some of the most joyful, most professionally fulfilling and personally empowering things I ever get to photograph.
I'm particular well suited to photographing queer and LGBTQ events, given my own involvement with the community, but I aim to prioritise all marginalised communities. I try to ensure my work is accessible to everyone by offering reduced rate pricing (see below!) for those experiencing financial hardship, or grassroots organisations with little-no budget. For the right cause, I am willing to volunteer my time - my own finances permitting!
